The Greater Mouse-eared batThe Mouse-eared bats

The Greater Mouse-eared bat
(Myotis myotis)
The Lesser Mouse-eared
(Myotis blythii)

Those two bats are very similar, even if the Lesser Mouse-eared Bat is usually sligthly smaller. Even if it's impossible to be sure of an identification only by looking at them, 90% of the Lesser-eared Bat has a small lighter spot on the top of the head. Those two large bats have big ears, and a "fox like" pointed muzzle. In winter, they both hibernate in caves or underground quarries, gathering sometimes in great number, hanging from the ceilings or packed in hollow deep cracks of the ceilings. The Greater Moused-eared bat has a northern distribution up to Holland, the Lesser Mouse-eared bat is more mediterranean. In France, it only occurs in the south of the country and doesn't appear near Bourges.
